Havana's Jewish Heritage
Delve into the history of Jewish immigrants who moved to Cuba in the early 20th century, 1920's & 1930's. Visit existing and important landmarks, synagogues, and meet members of the local Jewish community.
- Visit the three synagogues ( two in Vedado, another in Old Havana)
- See Menorah Square, dedicated to the holocaust victims
- The Jewish cemetery in Guanabacoa
- Have a cocktail and admire the unique decor of Hotel Raquel
This tour takes you through the history of the Jewish immigration and presence in Cuba.
We will meet the President of the Jewish Association in Havana who invites you into the synagogue still in use today in Vedado. We will also see another synagogue in Vedado before heading off to visit the cemetery in Guanabacoa to talk about the burial traditions and symbolism displayed throughout the cemetery. After our visit to Guanabacoa we head back to Old Havana and stop in at the Menorah Square to pay tribute to the victims of the holocaust. This square was inaugurated by Fidel Castro in June 2006.
We walk through Old Havana passing by the oldest Sephardic synagogue in Cuba, to arrive at the Hotel Raquel, a tribute to the Hebrew culture and it's ongoing presence in Cuba. This ornate hotel with it's baroque facade hints to a time gone by, when a predominantly Jewish neighbourhood of Old Havana once thrived. After the revolution 95% of the Jewish community left Cuba, but we invite you to experience the legacy left behind.

Yenni was an excellent guide in Havana and very knowledgeable about Cuban history. She responded well to any request that I had.I also had a one night stay in Vinales where Emilio was my guide. Again he was excellent and very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about local flora and fauna.
It would be impossible to explain this trip- it sounded great in the brochures and was even BETTER! Ares was very knowledgable about historical events in Cuba which I am very interested in as a history teacher (retired) He was passionate about Cuba itself, describing it as "paradise". His love for his country made his comments and the tour in general that much more personal and enjoyable. He was an eloquent, knowledgable, & easy to get along w/ guide. He was accommodating to our wishes, answered all questions, & gave his all to the 3 of us. Very charming introduction to Cuba!Rosi`s place in Havana was lovely. The view from her terrace was beautiful- tr ees and in the distance, the ocean. She went out of her way to make good breakfasts and to speak w/ me even though my Spanish is not very good.
